What's the skinny on weight-loss pills?

New study shows obese patients at risk using over-the-counter drugs.
A new review of existing research data confirms that some weight-loss drugs can raise blood pressure, posing a risk to obese patients who hope to reduce hypertension by losing weight. The risks posed by these products can be very serious and other complications such as seizures, rapid heartbeat, palpitations, heart attack, and even stroke.

Unregulated, unhealthy and unsafe.
Some diet aids claim to be "natural" or to contain only "herbal" ingredients. However, they may actually contain potentially harmful ingredients not listed on the product labels or in promotional advertisements. These products have not been approved by FDA and may be potentially harmful to unsuspecting consumers.

Unsuspecting consumers beware.
Many people seek diet aids to help lose weight. There are a variety of weight-loss products available without a prescription both over-the-counter and on the Internet. However, you should consider the following before making your decision:
  • No over-the-counter diet aids have been proven to be both safe and effective for everyone. Each person's health profile and situation is unique.
  • When a diet aid does work, it is usually because the person followed the manufacturer's recommendations to follow a healthy eating plan and get more exercise while taking the supplement.
  • Most diet aids and other supplements that are available over the counter are not regulated, so makers can make any claims they want.

Did you know that you could save up to $3,000 per year just by bringing your lunch to work? If the average lunch costs $10-$15 per meal and a brown bag lunch costs between $2-$3 per meal, then you can save $8-$12 every workday.
